This onlinebrochure , published by the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD) in conjunction with other organisations, answers questions about why a foreign internship might be an appealing option as part of a degree programme. It also contains important facts and tips on seeking an internship, a checklist for foreign work placements, suggestions for funding opportunities, and advice on how to settle in quickly in your host country.
You can find plenty of information (in German) at "Qualitätscheck Auslandspraktikum", including a number of downloads, about foreign internships, as well as advice on checking their quality. The website is run by a number of organisations involved in foreign work placements, including “Berufsbildung ohne Grenzen”, “Eurodesk”, “Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GIZ”, the international cultural voluntary service “kulturweit”, the DAAD and the Federal Employment Agency “ZAV”, to name just a few.
You can also get lots of information and tips for “foreign work placements” at the information event run by the International Offices at the Allgäu University Fair in April and during International Week in November.
You are unlikely to find answers to absolutely all of your questions despite online research, reading the DAAD website and attending our info event, etc. Our team in the International Office will also be happy to provide you with information and advise you one-to-one. You can find our opening hours and contact details on the International Office’s homepage.
The International Office is also the team to contact if you need confirmation or certificates for visa or BAföG applications, or other issues regarding your foreign internship. We can gladly issue these in English, too, if required.
As an Erasmus+ office, the International Office is also your first port of call if you wish to apply for funding as part of this programme. For details, please see Erasmus+ funding.
There is a lot of information to be found online! To help keep things on track and manageable, we recommend using quite specific search terms to quickly get relevant results.

For each degree programme, a designated professor is responsible for checking and approving internship contracts and acting as the subject advisor during your practical semester – in Kempten, they are known as “Practical semester officers”, or more simply placement officers. You can find out who your placement officer is on your faculty’s homepage (university website > Faculties).
The same conditions and rules apply regarding the university’s deadlines and formal arrangements whether you wish to complete an internship in Germany or abroad. Thus please always contact Academic Registryregarding these matters. That’s where you need to complete all the necessary the formalities at our end, such as authorising your internship contract, submitting your internship report and certificate, for example.
Academic Registry also holds foreign-language versions (English and certain others) of the required forms. You can download them here: Practical semester
