The future in your hands

You are curious about what goes into complex systems, machines and tools. How can robots perform tasks precisely and without errors? How can driver assistance systems be optimised? You are interested how to design and control the interplay between mechanical and electrical engineering/information technology subsystems.

Mechatronics combines mechanical and electrical engineering with information technology. Mechatronics requires networked thinking, creativity and enjoyment of innovative solutions, as you focus on optimally functioning end products, including their quality, costs and use. You will engineer new products that help create a more efficient and sustainable world.

Typical fields of activity for mechatronics engineers include:

  • Highly automated production lines and industrial robots
  • Mechatronic systems for assisted living for the elderly (Ambient Assisted Living – AAL)
  • Electromechanical assistance systems for automated driving
  • Implementing visions of Industry 4.0
  • Developing and designing the products of tomorrow

Details about this course

During the foundation course (semesters 1 and 2), you will primarily learn the fundamental mathematical, scientific and technical principles. The examinations for this part of the programme are designed to train you in the correct learning methods and lay the foundation for studying towards your degree.

The advanced course (semesters 3 to 7) covers the main core and specialist modules relevant to your future career. You can choose from a wide range of internship opportunities to gain practical experience early on and deepen the knowledge you have acquired in lectures and practical exercises.

The practical semester gives you the chance to apply the theoretical knowledge you have acquired so far in a highly vocational engineering role. This gives you an understanding for the interrelation between theory and practice and enables you to prepare systematically for your future career.

From the sixth semester on, you can choose to major in either Production Systems and Robotics or Ambient Assisted Living. Both specialisations run for two semesters and train you for roles in current key sectors. Deciding which path you which to take clearly paves the way for the career you wish to pursue according to your particular interests and aims. Classes overarching the specialisations address the increasing networking between individual disciplines.

before completing your degree by writing your bachelor’s thesis. Upon successfully completing the programme, the university of applied sciences will award you the academic degree of Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) .

Professional environment

Mechatronic systems and components are used in an extremely wide range of application areas, such as transportation systems and modes of transport (rail, road, air and water), production plants, energy generation systems, building technology and households.

The areas in which mechatronics engineers are deployed are thus just as diverse, including general mechanical engineering, automotive manufacturing and supplies, the production of medical equipment, or microsystems engineering. As a graduate who has focused heavily on system and interface tasks, you benefit from the systems mindset that you have already developed as a student at Kempten University of Applied Sciences.

Career prospects

The cutting-edge, integrative mindsets of mechatronic engineers are increasingly in demand. The overarching knowledge that combines the classic individual disciplines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and information technology is required everywhere that complex technical systems need to be developed. This generates outstanding employment opportunities.

The broad scope of your future-focused training on this degree programme opens the door to an extremely wide range of sectors. In our local region of Allgäu alone, you will find plenty of appealing job offers. The highly practical focus of this programme and the close ties between our university of applied sciences and industry place our graduates in great demand.

Postgraduate studies

The broad scope of this bachelor’s programme prepares you perfectly for specialising on a master’s degree programme – with us or other universities all over the world.

We run a three-semester consecutive master’s in Automation Engineering and Robotics (Master of Engineering) that provides a seamless transition to enhancing your qualifications. Shorter product lifecycles, extremely high quality requirements and the demand to get innovations quickly to market call for heavily networked work process (“concurrent engineering”). That’s the essence of this master’s degree programme.
